Groups St Andrews 2009 was held in the University of Bath in August
2009 and this first volume of a two-volume book contains selected
papers from the international conference. Five main lecture courses
were given at the conference, and articles based on their lectures
form a substantial part of the proceedings. This volume contains
the contributions by Gerhard Hiss (RWTH Aachen) and Volodymyr
Nekrashevych (Texas A&M). Apart from the main speakers,
refereed survey and research articles were contributed by other
conference participants. Arranged in alphabetical order, these
articles cover a wide spectrum of modern group theory. The regular
proceedings of Groups St Andrews conferences have provided
snapshots of the state of research in group theory throughout the
past 30 years. Earlier volumes have had a major impact on the
development of group theory and it is anticipated that this volume
will be equally important.

Johnny Donal, P.I., a retired cop, now with a successful
investigations agency, should be enjoying life in the SC
Lowcountry. He isn't. That he has a stellar reputation as an
investigator; that he has a source of independent wealth; that he
can pick and choose cases should, if anything, add to his good
life. None of it does. Instead, Donal is a troubled man. His lover
has left him and, worse, he's batting zero with his attempts to get
her back. He also has a new client with a strange attitude about
the circumstances surrounding her missing husband and Donal isn't
sure that he can trust the woman. Then a friend is murdered and
that case intertwines with Donal's missing husband case. Despite a
double dealing client, negative involvement with influential
locals, and political obstacles cluttering his investigation, the
question becomes can the P.I., who has problems of his own to
resolve, uncover the identity of the killer or killers and solve
the crimes?
We Southern guys love the ladies and we love to eat and to watch
the world go by. Sometimes we love the Southern climate, sometimes
that climate scares hell out of us. And there's the flora and fauna
of the South, so no, we can't forget the blooms and critters and
there are a few of 'em scattered in the poems in this little book
In all 34 poems reflect what I, and I believe other Southerners,
love and are good for us fill these few pages. The poems are my
stuff, written by a guy and sometimes a naughty word creeps in. All
of the poems have a Southern flavor. I'm truly hoping not only the
guys but the ladies will like my stuff. The ladies may skip the
naughty words. Or, they may enjoy them. Some of these poems were
previously published and a few were also reprinted in Quiction
where I was a weekly contributor. Poem titles and the publications
where my work were originally found are as follows. Hummingbird,
Cardinal, Snowy Egret, Circles and Cycles, A Benign Blue Sky,
Lowcountry Threads, Fishin' In The Gulf Stream, and Southern Boy
were first published in Dead Mule School of Southern Literature.
Outside My Door, Another Skin and A Seafood Boil were in Southern
Hum. Separation and Reunion and Stuff Makes Me Cold, Me and Myself
Again, and A Frogmore Stew were in Gator Springs Gazette. Bogalusa
Blues, On the Corner of Religion and Jazz, Wanderlust, and Cajun
Solution were first published inQuiction. Vile Beauties was in
Cellar Door. Louisiana first appeared in Flush Fiction Magazine.
The remaining poems are published here for the first time."

THE CARBON STEEL CARESS A Johnny Donal P.I. Novel Johnny Donal
P.I., is hired to solve the murder of a prominent Moultrie Bay, SC
woman who appears to be the latest victim in a series. The police
are stymied. The citizenry is howling for results. Donal's
investigation points to two murderers, Micah Capers and Joan
Wiley-Capers, a psychotic husband and wife team. But, before he can
bring them to justice, they disappear. The killers resurface,
having decided to abduct a well known film star, model, and singer.
While the fact is not known either to the intended abductee or to
Capers's wife Joan, the intended victim is Capers's half-sister who
he half lusts after/half blames for perceived damage to his life.
When the victim, Claudia Chatrian, is grabbed from Hilton Head
Island Donal is brought back into the case. It becomes a race
against time. Persistence rewards Donal with the vital clue to
where Claudia is being held captive and he effects a rescue but not
before the male of the murderous duo has killed his wife and
escaped. Donal tracks Capers, who manages to stay a step ahead,
first in Canada and then in Mexico. Finally, Donal's and Capers's
paths cross in the Houston airport where the killer is reentering
the U.S. under an alias. A fight ensues and Donal captures Capers.
Donal, back in SC, is informed that Capers has escaped from the
Houston jail. Capers is now obsessed with eliminating those who
thwarted him and finishing his love/hate 'game' with his half
sister. In a rampage designed to terrorize Claudia, Capers murders
her lawyer and tries for Donal. Donal moves Claudia for her
protection but the killer finds her. The denouement and the
Capers's death by immolation take place on a luxury yacht Off
Hilton head SC. The novel is structured as a suspense/chase story.
The reader knows the killers identity from the inception. The
protagonist must uncover motive, find the killer, and stop him.
In this fictionalized memoir, G. C. Smith "pulls back the covers"
on what goes on in offices and businesses she has known. In
amusing, incisive prose, she describes the various types that she
has come across during her working life. She has a satiric and
knowing eye when it comes to human nature. At the same time, she
delves deeper and sees the humanity and motives that cause people
to act the way they do. With a mixture of shock and delight, you
will no doubt recognize similarities to people you yourself have
encountered.-- Anthony Ambrogio, Editor
WHITE LIGHTNING is a story of a top notch stock car race-team
trying to grab the big prize in stock car racing that will, in
turn, make their Southern regional corporation, WHITE LIGHTNING
INDUSTRIES (car parts and care products and service stores), a
national corporate player. Bad guys try to take over the
corporation. Their skullduggery ends up with multiple murder. The
book bounces from the South Carolina Lowcountry to the NASCAR race
circuit to the Bahamas and back to the race circuit. It's got
intrigue. It's got suspense. It's got flirty girls. And it's got
redemption. It is, I think, a fun read.
